I turned my hobby into a business

Jamie Dean manages Church Paddock Fishery in Bedfield Lane, Kings Worthy.

He says, “Church Paddock Lake had been in the family for many years as part of wider farm land in the Worthies. My dad taught me to fly fish there when I was about five and the family stocked the lake with trout, initially just for our own use.

“In 2011 we opened Church Paddock as a business, allowing me to share my enthusiasm for the sport with other people.”

“Fly fishing is often perceived as a sport for the upper classes and river fishing can be very costly but we keep our prices very affordable. With natural springs ensuring the quality of our water, we’ve now created a fishery which is renowned as much for its trout as for its friendly atmosphere.

“I spend a lot of my time teaching other people to fish, and our regulars often stop by to talk, with many of them becoming friends. I still enjoy the peace and solitude of fishing. It’s a great way to release stress and enjoy the open air – and also often to bring home some really good trout for dinner.”

Church Paddock Fishery offers year-round fishing in its 1.5-acre spring-fed trout lake, with tuition for beginners and a range of fly packages. Prices start at £18 for a two-fish ticket. The fishery also sells its trout. Tel. 07765 591931. www.churchpaddock.co.uk.
