Tucked away in a converted barn just outside Winchester, Individual Interior Design offers a treasure trove of fabric swatches, wallpaper, furniture and accessories in a cosy studio.
The company also has a Bournemouth showroom, but from its Winchester base near Wonston it offers interior design services for private and commercial clients across the south east.
“We help property owners at any stage of the design process,” says Claire . “That might be giving advice for a blind or curtaining right the way through to designing multiple schemes for a stately home.”
And there’s certainly plenty to choose from. Individual Interior Design works with a wide range of soft-furnishing, paint and wallpaper companies: the designer swatch books that line the wall include samples from Zoffany, Colefax and Fowler, Jane Churchill, Nina Campbell, Porta Romana and Osborne and Little.
Traditional tartans can be sourced from Scottish weaver Johnstons of Elgin, and contemporary silks, geometric patterns and intricate embroidery from German company Zimmer + Rohde. Whether you’re looking for an unusual lamp shade or a statement piece of furniture, Claire can advise on the latest trends.
“The days of the feature wall have gone,” she says. “We’re seeing a return of wallpaper, with eclectic prints from British designers like Lewis & Wood making a real statement.”
In its look-book, Lewis & Wood’s prints include a montage of vintage trade cards and heritage prints dedicated to Bewick birds, fly fishing and country pursuits. They’re fun and whimsical, but also incredibly stylish and perfect for rural interiors with a connection to the past. The company also creates wide-width wallpapers, which are ideal for larger spaces.
“There’s a misconception that interior design is very costly,” Claire says. “We ask for a returnable £150 deposit, which secures our clients a home visit or consultation in our studio, and then work from there. It may be that we then follow up with a scheme which we present to them. Alternatively it might be a case of making suggestions for a hall chair, pendant lighting or re-upholstery of an existing piece of furniture. The minimum order for wallpaper is just one roll.”
All of Individual Interior Design’s curtaining is hand-made in-house in its Bournemouth workroom, ensuring quality and seamless customer service. Roman blinds, swags and tails, cushions, pelmets and bed covers are also hand-made on site, and the company does its own measuring and fitting. Paint is mixed to order from over 9,500 colours from companies like Little Greene, Paint and Paper Library, Zoffany and Sanderson. Showroom furniture and accessories are available for in-situ viewing on request.
“People use interior designers not only for their technical expertise but also because they have experience of creating schemes that are full of interest and texture and balanced in colour,” Claire says. “The most important part of our job is to listen to our clients and reflect their personalities in their living spaces.”
